GIRL POTTER SLAYER
Thursday October 31 is it Halloween and for me being a Dutch girl Halloween is not really a big thing. In Holland we are in the midst of a heavy discussion about Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet and the fact that Piet is black and in origin this character is coming from racial stereotyping. Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. The nation is divided now in 2 camps and the discussion is becoming nasty on all the social media platforms. I can see it from both ways. I can understand that colored people having negative feelings looking at Zwarte Piet but I know the fact that this character is black is not seen as a racial thing trough the eyes of the children who this celebration is for. Children don't see the color of Piet they see the fact he brings candy and presents.
In the end we in Holland going to solve this "Piet thing" in a Dutch way with lots of talk and we will reach a consensus in the end and that is another Dutch thing we invented the Polder model.
